Description
There is something extraordinary about watching a timeless scene through a modern lens — the familiar made fresh, the ancient made new. In “Past and Present in Perfect Harmony”, a group of Chassidim stand in deep prayer at the Kotel, their presence rooted in centuries of tradition, yet the colours and composition bring a bold, contemporary energy to the scene. As I painted this, my brush seemed to move on its own — bold, confident, and effortless.
Created in acrylic on canvas, this piece measures 90×140 cm | 35×55 in, giving it a commanding yet intimate presence on any wall. The palette bridges past and present with warm, earthy tones layered alongside brighter, more expressive marks. The result is a painting that feels both reverent and alive, honouring tradition while embracing the vitality of the present moment.
I created this piece because I believe that Jewish art does not have to look backwards to be meaningful. The men at the Kotel are timeless — their devotion unchanged across generations — but the way we see and interpret their prayer can be as fresh and dynamic as the world around us. This painting redefines what Judaica art can look like.
Living and creating in Jerusalem, I am surrounded by this beautiful tension between old and new. This original work by Chaya Koritz captures that harmony perfectly. Whether for a private collection, a synagogue, or a modern living space, it brings spiritual depth and contemporary style together.
